The Hunters

The Hunters (Brotherband Chronicles, #3)The Hunters by John Flanagan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Third and final book in the exciting, adventure series, Brotherband Chronicles, for juveniles, teens, and adults alike is The Hunters. Hal is back with Thorn and his Heron brotherhood and hot on the trail of the bloodthirsty pirate Zavac and the stolen Skandian treasure, the Andomal. Zavac and his crew of cutthroats somehow seem to stay ahead of the Herons, resorting to bribing and murder. Hal is determined to track Zavac and return the Andomal to his homeland, earning back honor and respect for him and his young friends.

Both series, Ranger's Apprentice and Brotherband Chronicles, exemplify the strengths of working together, friendship and loyalty, patience, thinking outside the box, and you can see as both series progress a maturing of all the characters. I've always looked forward to the release of Flanagan's novels and am wondering what he's working on now.

The Goodbye Quilt

The Goodbye QuiltThe Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Linda & Dan Davis's only child, and daughter at that, Molly, is ready to head off to college - clean on the East Coast. Linda has been been piecing together a lovely quilt of Molly's life - articles of clothing, badges, ribbon, and whatnot. When Linda decides to drive Molly to college, from their MidWestern home across all those miles, she decides to take the quilt with them and hopes to finish it along the way. Many memories and emotions are tied into the quilt and the trip becomes quite a journey. As the odometer climbs, so does Linda's emotions and she tries to find a way to let go and let Molly find her own way.

Thrown in between chapters are wonderful little tidbits - quotes by quilters, poets, and writers. This book is so well written and Susan Wiggs explains every up and down emotion Moms go through while letting their children grow up and leave.

If you adventure and fantasy teamed with realism...

Halt's Peril (Ranger's Apprentice, #9)Halt's Peril by John Flanagan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just when I think that John Flanagan can't top his previous release in the Ranger's Apprentice series, The Kings of Clonmel, he comes out with #9 - Halt's Peril. Even though this is published as juvenile fiction, I am just as eager to read it as my 14 year old son. Our heroes, Will, Halt, and Horace band together again to capture the leaders of the cult, Tennyson and the Outsiders who are on a quest to con the unknowing in the Kingdom of Araluen out of the few valuables they own. Traveling with the Outsiders are two Genovesans, paid assassins, who think nothing of taking a life with their crossbows. Full of action, details, loyalty to friends and country, and adventure, Halt's Peril is sure to capture your attention!
